Assistant Superintendent

The Assistant Superintendent assists the Superintendent in coordinating field operations for projects with a commitment to quality and safety including managing the use of material and workforce on the job site and ensuring client satisfaction and company profit. The Assistant Superintendent must have a comprehensive knowledge of the day-to-day field operations for their assigned project(s) including planning, coordinating, sequencing work, procurement of materials, and supervising subcontractors and vendors to ensure the work is completed on time, within budget, while adhering to F&H’s quality standards.  The Assistant Superintendent may take the lead on a small project under the direct supervision of a Superintendent or may assist the Superintendent on a large project ($5 million or greater).  At no time will the Assistant Superintendent be assigned concurrently to more than one project.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Understanding of control costs

  • Knowledge of various construction disciplines
  • Knowledge of Union Agreements/Jurisdiction
  • Ability to understand and read drawings and specifications
  • Ability to quantify work based on plans and assumptions of the design intent
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills with the ability to use MS Office with proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, and PowerPoint); Knowledge of Adobe and Bluebeam
  • Operating knowledge of Primavera

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates work of Subcontractors, Suppliers, and F&H Workers
  • Manages and publishes subcontractor’s schedule on a weekly basis and reviews at the subcontractor meeting
  • Keeps the job on schedule, including providing Project Manager with information required for initial baseline scheduling and accurate and timely submittal of schedule updates and cost projections
  • Hires, orients, and discharges hourly labor, both F&H (within F&H’s hourly pay guidelines and job description) and temporary service employees
  • Assures that all work meets or exceeds the quality and standards defined by the plans, specifications, and F&H standards
  • Assures safe working conditions on the jobsite in compliance with appropriate government safety standards and that the F&H safety program and policies are enforced 
  • Assures that all rental and purchased equipment complies with applicable safety standards
  • Prepares required F&H daily reports on time in current computer software system and receives Subcontractor daily reports 
  • Presents factual and appropriate information on F&H Daily Reports and reviews Subcontractor reports for accuracy and issues
  • Resolves issues with building inspectors
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding the sequencing of work
  • Organizes and lays out project site logistics including entrances/exits for loading and off-loading, man lift/loading dock, crane location, site security fencing, dumpsters, pedestrian protection, SWPPP, lighting, specific staging requirements, concrete pumps, ready-mix staging, signage, parking, temporary utilities, etc.
  • Develops and implements a Quality program and oversees execution of the F&H Punch List Program
  • Ensures required inspections are scheduled, coordinated, and performed, tracked and closed out.
  • Obtains building permits and other miscellaneous job-related permits
  • Provides list of required jobsite tools, supplies, and equipment to Purchasing Agent for consideration that is consistent with project budget
  • Develops and trains subordinate construction personnel 
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals for Subordinates, Assistant Superintendents, Foremen, and Field Engineers
  • Assures that horizontal and vertical building control is accurately established and that Subcontractors coordinate their layout with this control
  • Reviews field-use shop drawings to ensure proper coordination and adherence to contract documents
  • Reviews weekly time cards for cost-coding accuracy
  • Fills-out all information for air quality and storm-water (SWPPP) permits for review and approval of the Project Manager, then provides approved document to Project Engineer for filing to appropriate agency
  • Assists in maintaining positive relations with Clients, Architects, Consulting Engineers and others related to the job to assure good communications and rapport
  • Establishes and maintains equitable and businesslike relationships between the Company and Subcontractors and Suppliers, coordinating their work as necessary, and assuring their performance as required

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Construction Management or equivalent or minimum six years of increasingly responsible construction experience in a trade or trades, to include at least two years as a Foreman 
  • Possession of a valid driver license
  • OSHA -30

Physical Requirements

Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, passenger use of construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Performing this job requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, sit, talk, hear, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works on-site at the construction work site where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock.  The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud.  F&H is AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
